STEP 3: Blink code identification and system response

  1. If you already know how to read ABS Blink Codes from the ECU in question, please go straight to STEP 4: Blink code list
  2. If you are unsure how to read ABS Blink Codes from the ECU, start by familiarising yourself with the diagram below, and then, where appropriate, follow the step by step procedure in the table
  3. Please ensure all necessary Health and Safety precautions are implemented before commencing any repair work

I

Establish whether any faults are present.

The ECU incorporates a Blink Code system, using a built-in LED indicator and diagnostic plug.

If no stored faults are present, the LED on the front face of the ECU will be 'GREEN' and constantly on.

If stored faults are present, the same LED wil be constantly flashing 'RED'.

The LED is located between the two left-hand plugs on the top row of the ECU.

The ECU can provide two levels of diagnosis:

LEVEL 1 - The number of 'RED' flashes will indicate the plug number where the fault has been detected. The most recent fault is the one displayed. If there is more than one fault stored, then you must access the fault memory (see Step II below).

LEVEL 2 - The ECU will give greater detail of the fault following activation of the Blink Code. It will give details of the faulty component and reason for failure e.g. 'Sensor right - open circuit'.

II

Reading Blink Codes:

Fit a Diagnostic Push Button (Part No. EZ1022) to the diagnostic socket (right hand socket on top row, marked 'DIA').

OR...

Short together the top two pins on the diagnostic socket using a 'link wire'.

The LED will display as follows:

Press the button or short the pins together twice quickly, within a 5 second period.

- LED indicates current configuration using 'GREEN' flashes.

Four seconds LED 'off'

- LED indicates the current faulty component using 'RED' flashes.

Two seconds LED 'off'

- LED indicates the nature of the fault using 'AMBER' flashes.

Four seconds LED 'off' (indicating possible further faults stored).

Consult the Blink Code List for details of all possible faults and their codes (sequence of flashes)

III

Clearing stored faults from ECU:

The LED will display as follows:

Press the Diagnostic Push Button, or short the pins quickly together three times within a five second period.

- LED flashes 'RED' for approx.. 3 seconds.

- LED then changes to 'RED/GREEN' flashes.

Press the Diagnostic Push Button, or short the pins quickly together once more whilst the 'RED/GREEN' flashes are still flashing.

Then one second LED 'off'

- LED flashes 'AMBER' for approx. 2 seconds, this confirms that the memory has been cleared.

Turn power off, then turn it back on to rest ECU.
